Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the foundation and our supporter directory.
What is the Jamaica Education for the Poor Foundation?
+
We're a Maryland-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Hyattsville, run by the Jamaican diaspora in the Washington, DC area. We work to improve education and life outcomes for at-risk youth in Jamaica — through school supplies, scholarships, and mentoring — and we're raising funds to build a leadership training center there.
How does the business directory work?
+
Local businesses submit their information through our listing form. Our team reviews each submission. Once approved, the business pays the listing fee and is listed in our directory as an official supporter.
How much does it cost to be listed?
+
A one-time setup fee (currently $149) secures your listing, plus a recurring $49/year fee that keeps it live going forward. 100% of the proceeds go directly toward our education programs — books, supplies, and leadership training.
Do I pay before or after approval?
+
After. Submitting is free. We review your business first, and only ask for payment once you've been approved. If your listing isn't a fit, you won't be charged.
What happens if the $49/year renewal fails or I cancel?
+
Your listing stays live through your current paid period. If a renewal payment fails and can't be retried successfully, or the subscription is canceled, your listing comes down from the public directory until it's reactivated.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
+
Yes. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your listing donation is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You'll receive a receipt for your records.
Where does the money go?
+
Proceeds fund our core programs: books and school supplies, scholarships and youth mentoring, and building a leadership training center in Jamaica for at-risk youth.
What kinds of businesses can be listed?
+
Any legitimate local business is welcome to apply. We organize listings by Google Business Profile category so customers can find you the same way they'd find you on Google.
