Why Education Changes Communities: Lessons Shared Between Prince George's County and Jamaica

We get asked this a lot: why does a foundation based in Prince George's County spend so much energy on education in Jamaica? The honest answer is that the two communities have more in common than it might seem — and the same lesson keeps showing up in both places. Education is what breaks the cycle.

Breaking the cycle of poverty through education isn't an abstract idea for the families we work with. Whether it's a student in rural Jamaica without access to textbooks, or a student in Prince George's County without reliable internet for homework, the barrier is often the same: a lack of resources standing between a kid and their potential.

Reading and literacy are where that cycle usually starts. A child who falls behind on reading early tends to stay behind — in Jamaica and in Maryland alike. That's why book drives and library access aren't side projects for us; they're core to the mission on both fronts.

Technology access is the modern version of the same problem. A student without a computer or stable internet is at a real disadvantage, whether they're in Kingston or Hyattsville. Closing that gap is one of the most direct ways a donation can change a specific kid's outcome.

Mentorship matters just as much as materials. Books and laptops help, but a student who has an adult believing in them — a tutor, a coach, a community member — tends to go further. Part of what we're building in Jamaica is a leadership training center designed around exactly that kind of mentorship.

Community involvement is the thread that ties it all together. Every business that joins our directory, every family that donates a barrel of supplies, every volunteer who shows up for a book drive is proof that a community showing up for its kids works — whether that community is in Prince George's County or Jamaica.

That's why we serve both. The lessons transfer, and so does the impact.
