What Nonprofit Sponsorship Does That Advertising Doesn't

What Nonprofit Sponsorship Does That Advertising Doesn't

Sponsorship is often pitched as better than advertising, which is not true in general and is true in specific ways worth separating out.

Advertising wins on speed and control. If you need enquiries this month, if you want to target a particular postcode or search term, if you need to be able to turn spend up and down weekly, buy ads. Sponsorship does none of that and pretending otherwise wastes your money.

Sponsorship wins on three things.

Duration. The listing and the link stay live. The spend does not have to be repeated monthly for the asset to keep existing, which over a few years changes the arithmetic considerably.

Credibility of the source. An advert is your claim about yourself, placed where you paid to place it. A listing on a nonprofit's site is a third party stating that you did something, which is a different kind of evidence and one your competitors cannot buy at the last minute.

A reason to be chosen rather than a reason to be seen. Adverts get you into consideration. Very little gets you out of a tie once you are there. Community support is a cheap tiebreaker because acting on it costs the customer nothing.

The sensible conclusion is not that one replaces the other. It is that they do different jobs and a business doing only advertising has no answer to the question of why someone should pick them over the identically advertised firm next door.

If you want the sponsorship half, applying is free and payment comes only after approval.
