The Small Costs That End a Jamaican Child's Education

The Small Costs That End a Jamaican Child's Education

People assume a child leaves school because of something big. A family crisis, an illness, a catastrophe. Occasionally that is true. Far more often the cause is a set of costs so small that no individual one of them looks like an emergency to anybody except the family carrying them.

A uniform that cannot be replaced when it no longer fits. Exam fees due the same week as something else that cannot wait. Bus fare that runs out on a Wednesday. A textbook the curriculum assumes every household can simply buy.

None of these is a crisis. That is precisely what makes them so effective at ending an education. A crisis attracts help. A slow accumulation of twenty dollar problems does not, and by the time the pattern is obvious the student has already stopped attending and stopped thinking of themselves as a student.

This is why JEPF's day-to-day work looks so unremarkable written down. Books. School supplies. Backpacks. Computers and printers. Scholarships and assistance with fees. There is no framework here and no program name worth trademarking. There is a list of things that decide whether a child finishes the year.

It is also why the amounts involved are so much smaller than people expect. Donors often assume meaningful help starts in the hundreds. In practice a single modest donation frequently covers several of the exact costs that were about to end someone's schooling.

We support the institutions as well as the students, for the same reason. A school without supplies produces the same outcome as a student without them, and in some communities it is the school that is short rather than the family.

Covering a term, though, does not answer what a student does after the last term. That is the gap the leadership training center is meant to close, and it is why JEPF does not stop at supplies even though supplies are the most immediately effective thing we do.

If you want to fund the unglamorous part, that is the part that stops the most damage.
