Jerk and Barbecue Festivals in the DMV

Jerk and Barbecue Festivals in the DMV

Jerk festivals occupy a specific place in the DMV summer. They are cheaper than the wine-led events, more casual, and judged almost entirely on one thing.

That thing is whether the jerk is actually jerk. Properly done it involves pimento wood, time, and a cook who is not in a hurry. The shortcut version, chicken with a jerk-flavoured sauce brushed on at the end, is common at events where the organizer treated catering as a box to tick. The difference is obvious on the first bite and it is the whole reason to go to one festival over another.

The circuit runs across several venues. Howard County Fairgrounds hosts the largest, with the space for a proper vendor row. Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring has hosted jerk and barbecue events in a more compact urban setting. Rosecroft Raceway and other sites pick up the rest.

Competition formats appear at some events: chef battles, cash prizes, judged categories. These are genuinely worth building an afternoon around, because vendors cook differently when they are being scored.

Practical advice. Go early in the day, because the best vendors sell out and the queues compound. Do a full lap before buying anything. Bring cash. Expect to stand on grass in August heat and dress accordingly. Bring more water than you think.

JEPF's events in this category have run under several names over the years, including the Silver Spring Jerk and Barbecue Festival, the Howard County Jerk and BBQ Festival and the International Barbecue and Jerk Festival. Ours are fundraisers. Proceeds go to education, mentoring and leadership development for at-risk young people in Jamaica.
