How Nonprofit Sponsorship Actually Works for a Local Business

How Nonprofit Sponsorship Actually Works for a Local Business

Local business owners get asked to sponsor things constantly, and most of the asks are vague. Support our cause. Give back to the community. Very little of it explains what happens to the money or what the business gets, which is why most of it gets ignored.

So here is the JEPF version, stated plainly.

You apply to the supporter directory. That is free, and it does not commit you to anything. We review the business, because a directory that lists whoever pays is worth nothing to the businesses in it and worth less than nothing to the nonprofit attached to it. If we approve you, we send a private payment link. Once the contribution is received your listing goes live.

What you get: a listing in the public supporter directory, searchable by category and city. Your own page carrying your services, service area and contact details, with structured data search engines can read. A link to your website from a 501(c)(3) domain that stays live as long as the listing does. Public supporter status you can use on your own site, your Google Business Profile and in proposals. And a receipt, because contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

What you do not get: an endorsement. A listing says a business supports this foundation. It does not say we vouch for its work, and we are careful about that distinction because the moment a supporter directory starts implying endorsement it stops being credible for everybody in it.

The difference between this and advertising is duration. An ad stops working the day the budget stops. A listing keeps working, which is the actual argument for it, and it costs less than a month of most ad spends.

Businesses that want to do more than a listing can sponsor an event or a program directly. Event sponsorship attaches your name to festivals that have been running in this area for years. Program sponsorship funds mentoring, supplies and scholarships.

Either way the money goes to the same place: education and opportunity for at-risk young people, and the leadership training center we are raising funds to build in Jamaica.
