How a Community Organization Can Actually Support Young People

How a Community Organization Can Actually Support Young People

Churches, community groups and small nonprofits run a lot of youth activity, and a great deal of it produces nothing. Not for lack of goodwill. The failures are structural and fairly predictable.

The most common one is the single event. A day of activities, photographs, genuine enthusiasm, and then nothing for eleven months. Young people read this accurately: adults did a thing that made the adults feel good. The event was not the problem. The absence of anything after it was.

The second is programming designed around what the organization can easily provide rather than what young people are short of. Plenty of groups run a homework club because they have a room, in a community where the actual constraint is transport or exam fees.

The third is volunteer churn. A rotating cast of well-meaning adults is worse than a smaller number who stay, because the entire value of the relationship is continuity. Two committed volunteers beat eight occasional ones.

What works is unexciting. Pick something small enough that you can do it every month for two years. Ask young people and the adults around them what is actually stopping progress, and believe the boring answer when you get it. Keep the same people in front of them. Track who is drifting and follow up individually rather than announcing another open session.

Partnering also beats duplicating. If a group down the road already runs mentoring, fund it or supply volunteers rather than launching a parallel version that splits a small pool of young people between two half-full programs.

JEPF's own answer to this is the leadership training center we are raising funds to build in Jamaica: somewhere permanent, staffed by people who are still there next year, so the programming does not depend on who happens to be available. Until that exists, the work runs on the same principles at smaller scale.
