Food and Wine Festivals Near Washington, DC

The Washington area has more food and wine festivals than most people realise, and they vary enormously in what you actually get for a ticket.
At one end are the large commercial events, heavily branded, expensive, with a tasting model built around volume. Perfectly good, and rarely memorable. At the other end are community festivals run by cultural organizations, where the food is cooked by people with a personal stake in it being right.
The Caribbean end of the circuit sits firmly in the second category, and the food is the reason. Jerk, curry goat, oxtail, patties, festival, rice and peas, done by cooks whose reputation in their own community depends on it. That is a different proposition from a catering contract.
Geography spreads the circuit across three jurisdictions. Howard County Fairgrounds is the anchor venue for the larger Maryland events. Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring hosts the more compact urban ones. Prince William County Fairgrounds and other Virginia sites pick up the southern half of the region, and the District itself sees more indoor and evening events than full-day outdoor festivals.
How to choose one worth the drive. Look at who is organizing it, because a cultural organization or a nonprofit usually means the food is the point. Check the start time, since afternoon starts signal family events and evening starts signal something else. Look at whether the vendor list is published; organizers proud of their vendors say who they are.
Finally, check what the ticket funds. Some of these are commercial, which is fine. Ours are not: JEPF's festivals are fundraisers, and the proceeds go to books, supplies, scholarships and mentoring for at-risk young people in Jamaica, and toward the leadership training center we are raising money to build.
Upcoming dates are published on our events page as they are confirmed.
