Donating Goods Instead of Money: What Actually Helps

Plenty of people would rather give things than money, and for schools that is often exactly right. It is also the form of giving most easily wasted, so it is worth being blunt about what works.
What gets used: textbooks and reading material in reasonable condition, school supplies, backpacks, computers and printers. JEPF collects and ships these to students and to schools.
What causes problems: unsorted mixed donations, damaged or heavily outdated books, equipment with missing parts or chargers, and anything requiring a repair we cannot do locally. Shipping is not free and sorting takes volunteer hours, so an item that ends up discarded at the other end has cost more than it gave.
Computers are the case where this matters most. A working machine is one of the highest-value things you can donate, because coursework assumes access and a student without it is doing a harder version of the same assignment. A machine that will not boot is a shipping cost.
Timing matters more than people expect. Supplies are most useful arriving before a school year, not during it, and a shipment that lands in the wrong month sits in storage.
The single most useful thing you can do is call (240) 330-5127 before you collect anything. A five minute conversation tells you what is actually short this term, which stops well-meant effort going into the wrong items.
If none of that is convenient, money is not a lesser contribution. It buys the right item in the right month, which is usually what the goods were trying to achieve.
