What At-Risk Young People in Jamaica Are Actually Up Against

Writing about this badly is easy, and most fundraising does. The country becomes a backdrop of hardship and the young people become a category. Neither helps anyone understand what is actually in the way.

Cost is the most immediate obstacle, and it is smaller than people assume. Uniforms, exam fees, books, transport. Individually modest, arriving together, and decisive for a household with no slack. A family does not decide to end a child's education. They face a month where the money does not stretch, and then another one.

Distance compounds cost. A student who lives far from a school that suits them needs transport every day, and transport is the expense that quietly fails first because it recurs.

Schools are often short of the materials the curriculum assumes. A student who has done the reading cannot demonstrate it without the textbook, and a teacher cannot run the lesson without the supplies. This is why JEPF ships books, supplies, computers and printers to institutions as well as helping individual students.

Then there is the question of what school is for. A young person who cannot see what finishing leads to weighs it against work that pays now. That calculation is rational, and it is rarely addressed by anyone. It is the strongest argument for mentoring and for somewhere to go after school rather than more exhortation to stay in it.

The last obstacle is attention. Capable students who are neither top of the class nor in trouble get very little of it, and they are the ones most likely to drift out without anyone registering it in time.

None of this is exotic or unfixable. It is a series of small, specific, affordable gaps, which is exactly why a foundation of this size can make a difference in it at all.
