Caribbean Cultural Events in Maryland: A Short Field Guide

Caribbean Cultural Events in Maryland: A Short Field Guide

Maryland has one of the larger Caribbean populations in the country and a festival calendar to match, most of it invisible unless you already know somebody.

The venues repeat. Howard County Fairgrounds hosts the largest of them, with the space for parking, stages and a proper vendor row. Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring works for smaller, more urban events with foot traffic. Rosecroft Raceway, Prince William County Fairgrounds across the river in Virginia, Bowie Baysox Stadium and Mary's Land Farm in Ellicott City all turn up in the circuit.

The seasons repeat too. Late spring through early autumn carries the outdoor festivals. Jamaica Independence in early August produces its own cluster. Indoor events fill the winter, usually music-led and usually at restaurants and lounges rather than fairgrounds.

What separates a good one from a forgettable one is almost always the food. A festival where the cooking is an afterthought is a concert with queues. The ones worth travelling for treat the vendor row as the main event, and you can tell within ten minutes which kind you are at.

The second tell is the crowd. Family-oriented events and late-night events are different products and both are fine, but going to one expecting the other is the usual source of disappointment. Check the start time. An afternoon start is a family event.

If you have never been: bring cash, dress for standing outdoors, arrive earlier than you think, and eat in stages rather than committing to the first thing you see.

JEPF's own events sit in this circuit and have for years. Ours are fundraisers, with proceeds going to education for at-risk young people in Jamaica, and the full record of what we have run is on the events page.
