Back-to-School Resources for Prince George's County Families (2026 Guide)

Back to school season hits every Prince George's County family's wallet at the same time — uniforms, supplies, backpacks, technology fees. If you're searching for school resources near me this year, here's where to start looking.

School supply drives are the fastest way to offset the cost. Community centers, churches, and nonprofits (including ours) run collection drives throughout July and August. Watch for donation bins at local businesses — many of the businesses in our supporter directory host one.

Backpack giveaways are another common find in Prince George's County back to school season, typically hosted by community organizations, local churches, and county events in the weeks before the first day of school. They tend to go quickly, so it's worth checking dates early.

Library resources are an underused option. The Prince George's County Memorial Library System offers free school supplies at some back-to-school events, along with year-round literacy programs, homework help, and free access to computers and the internet at branches across the county, including Hyattsville.

After-school programs help working families bridge the gap between the school bell and the end of the workday. Prince George's County Public Schools runs after-school programming at many schools, and community organizations like local Boys & Girls Clubs and recreation centers offer additional options countywide.

Free tutoring is available through several channels: library homework help sessions, school-based programs, and community nonprofits. If your child is falling behind or you just want extra support, ask your school counselor what's available, or reach out to us — we can often point you in the right direction.

Community events matter too. Back-to-school fairs pop up around the county each August, often combining free supplies, health screenings, and family activities in one stop. Check our Events page for ones we know about.
