What a Youth Nonprofit in Hyattsville Actually Does All Year

Most people encounter this foundation twice a year, at a festival. That is a reasonable but misleading view of what the work is.
The visible part is the events. Setup, a long day, breakdown, and then the money comes in. That is maybe six weekends a year and it is the smallest portion of the effort.
The rest looks like this. Requests arrive from families and students, usually about a specific cost that is about to end a child's schooling. Each one needs checking and a decision, and there are more of them than there is money, which is the part nobody enjoys.
Book drives run on their own cycle, which is collecting, sorting, and shipping in time to be useful before a school year rather than during it. Sorting is where most of the volunteer hours go and it is not something people volunteer for twice unless they are committed.
Business applications to the supporter directory need reviewing. This is deliberately slow, because a directory that lists whoever pays is worth nothing to the businesses in it.
Mentoring coordination is the quiet ongoing one. Matching, following up, noticing when a relationship has gone silent, and restarting it before it lapses. Nobody photographs this and it is the thing most likely to change an outcome.
Then there is the ordinary administration of any 501(c)(3): filings, receipts, records, the treasurer's work. JEPF's officers serve as volunteers and report no compensation, which means all of this happens around people's jobs.
The foundation is at 8003 24th Ave, Hyattsville, MD 20783, and the phone is (240) 330-5127. If you live nearby and want to help with the unexciting middle of the year rather than the festivals, that is the part where an extra pair of hands changes the most.
